La Paz, Bolivia
During the week of September 3rd, the rabies Directors of the nine states with highest risk will be invited to a meeting with the Minister of Health in La Paz, Bolivia. During this meeting the Bolivian Plan of Action for Rabies Control, which was recently updated, will be presented.

Cochabamba, Bolivia
The Bolivian Bat Conservation Program (BIOTA-PCMB) and the Museum of Natural History Alcide D'Orbigny in Cochabamba, Bolivia will be inagurating an exhibit about bats in association with World Rabies Day. The focus of the exhibit will be on bat conservation. Presentations will be available throughout the week on bat ecology, bat conservation, and prevention of rabies from bats. Also, a round table is currently being prepared and planned to be lunched by air at Radio San Rafael (FM 92.3) with important guests that will cover most of the topics concerned to rabies in Bolivia. BRAZIL
The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) intends to hold a national media campaign in collaboration with PAHO Brazil. Coverage is planned through television and radio interviews on or around WRD. An emphasis will also be placed on responsible pet ownership messages. In August the PAHO office in Brazil, together with the Ministry of Health of Brazil, distributed to all Health State Secretaries a DVD with a cartoon on dog's vaccination against rabies. In celebration of World Rabies Day, a national meeting on rabies control program for the States Secretariat of Heath will be held the 18th and 19th of September in Brasília-DF, Brazil. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is pleased to take part in World Rabies Day by holding a Rabies Symposium on Thursday, September 6, 2007. The goal is to raise awareness among Canadians with a panel of keynote speakers from the community of researchers, veterinarians, wildlife biologists and public health officials.

CHILE
World Rabies Day will be celebrated in Chile along with a day of responsible pet ownership through educational outreach at a chain of shopping centers. The
Representative of PAHO, jointly with the Undersecretary of Public Health will give a press conference emphasizing the importance of the achievements Chile has made in rabies prevention and control while also presenting that rabies still exists in the environment and still presents a risk.

COLUMBIA
Bogota
The international representations of the WSPA, the OPS, the Ministry of the Social Protection and the Secretariat of Health of Bogota will make the 7 of September an academic event on rabies with the participation of the Farming Colombian Institituto - ICA and the National Institute of Health - INS. On the 8th of September, dog vaccinations will be held and an event in the Fontibon locality. COSTA RICA
The regional office (Central America & Caribbean) of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) is planning a joint campaign with PAHO Central America. They are producing and distributing posters and booklets about rabies and dog bite prevention to schoolchildren. There will also be an opportunity for focussed press conferences and meetings with local veterinary associations and enhanced rabies vaccination campaigns. DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
On August 10, 2007, the National Secretary of Health together with the PAHO Representation Office in the Dominican Republic will be holding a series of meetings.  Participants include Societies from the Veterinarians and Physicians Schools, Associations of Protection of the Animals (PADELA), Dominican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to the Animals (SODOPREC), associations of clinics, academic universities; veterinary medicine schools.  On September 6, 2007, World Rabies Day will be launched with a press conference at the National Secretary of Health.  This event will serve as recognition to the people who have contributed in the fight against rabies.  On September 8, 2007, a "Walk for World Rabies Day" will be held in East Turret.  The day will include exhibitions, vaccinations, and promotion of local rabies prevention and control.   Free vaccinations will be carried out from September 3rd – 8th at established posts in the provinces of Dajabon, provinces of the East and Santo Domingo.

ECUADOR
On September 8, 2007, the Minister and National Authorities will hold a press conference in association with World Rabies Day.  A solemn session may also be held with authorities from all health institutions in the PAHO Representation Office.  Police dogs will be used in training demonstrations, stressing that they are "vaccinated against rabies." 

EL SALVADOR
San Salvador
On September 7 World Rabies Day will be celebrated with an official act from government authorities.  School activities will also be held.

GUATEMALA
 In August, World Rabies Day will start with the vaccination campaign of dogs in higher risk urban areas.  During the week of September 3rd – 8th, press conferences on World Rabies Day will be held.  Information on rabies prevention will be disseminated to health services and to the general public.  Promotion activities will be concentrated in areas that are at a higher-risk for rabies.  Veterinary and medical schools will celebrate World Rabies Day by hosting scientific conferences.  Activities will also occur in primary schools, including a World Rabies Day drawing competition.  DVDs, posters and the “Monica’s gang down with rabies” kids cartoon will be distributed.     

HAITI
On September 11th, World Rabies Day will be celebrated in Haiti.  A press conference with the presence of the Health and Agriculture Ministers will be held.  International and national authorities will report on the rabies situation in the country.  Authorities will also discuss what is still needed to make Haiti rabies-free.  Also on September 11, a scientific conference will be held with presentations from the health and agriculture authorities.  A National Commission to fight rabies including government, international organizations and non-government organizations will be launched.  In October, a mass vaccination campaign to vaccinate dogs will be initiated with the support of the national and international community.

HONDURAS
From September 3rd – 8th activities are planned in Honduras in recognition of World Rabies Day including a "Walk for Rabies."  Information on rabies prevention and World Rabies Day will be disseminated in the schools, including a mural creation and parade.    

MEXICO

NICARAGUA
From September 3rd – 8th activities are planned in Nicaragua in recognition of World Rabies Day.  Press conferences will be held on September 8, 2007.  Information on rabies prevention and World Rabies Day will be disseminated to health services and to the general public.  Technical information on rabies and other zoonoses will be updated and printed.  Conferences will be held in veterinary and medical schools to celebrate World Rabies Day including participants from the field of health and agriculture.

PARAGUAY
On September 7,  with police support, the traffic will be stopped for 5 minutes in
front of National Zoonosis Center, and information about rabies will be distributed.  Students from the Veterinary Faculties will wear T-shirts with WRD logo.  The act of stopping the traffic is intended to give significance to stop rabies in Paraguay.  Later on a press conference will be held and the national rabies campaign will start.  Information
materials will be distributed to the public.

PERU
The Ministry of Health in Peru will be coordinating an official declaration of World Rabies Day with a parade and festival in Lima, Peru. PUERTO RICO
World Rabies Day events are scheduled from September 7-14. On Saturday, September 8, Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) in a collaborative effort with the Humane Society of Southern Arizona(HSSA) is honoring WRD with a low cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic. The Clinic is being held from 8AM – 10AM at the Pima Animal Care Center, 4000 N. Silverbell Rd., Tucson, AZ 85745. Only dogs and cats three months and older will be vaccinated against rabies. All pets must be brought to the clinic by a responsible adult. Dogs must be secured on a leash, and cats must be in a carrier box. There will be a $5.00 fee per vaccination. On Friday, September 7 the Wildlife Services program and the National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC) are sponsoring a 4K run/walk from 10AM-12PM. Each participant will receive a World Rabies Day T-shirt and information regarding the Wildlife Services rabies program. The run will start promptly at 10AM outside the main entrance to the Wildlife Sciences building on the NWRC headquarters campus. Alachua County, FL
OPERATION CATNIP OFFERS FREE RABIES VACCINES FOR STRAY CATS IN HONOR OF WORLD RABIES DAY. On September 9, Operation Catnip will provide free rabies boosters for any cat that has "graduated" from the program. All cats that have been ear-tipped as a sign that they have been sterilized and vaccinated at Operation Catnip are eligible for free rabies booster shots that will last for 3 years. Alachua County homeless stray and feral cats that have not yet been sterilized are also eligible for free spay and neuter surgery at the September 9 clinic. Operation Catnip is a nonprofit volunteer organization with the mission to reduce the number of homeless cats in Alachua County by spaying and neutering as many as possible. With an estimated 36,000 unowned cats living in the county's backyards, porches, barns, businesses, and neighborhoods, the group has its work cut out for it. So far almost 20,000 cats have passed over Operation Catnip's operating tables since the first surgery was performed in 1998. In addition to kitty birth control, all cats admitted for care also receive vaccinations to keep them healthy. The first rabies vaccination lasts only one year and requires a booster vaccine 12 months later. Subsequent rabies vaccines are good for three years. Reservations for the clinic are required for all cats, and all cats must be brought in humane wire traps. Traps are available for loan from Operation Catnip. On September 7 and 8, 2007 the Green River District Health Department, along with local veterinarians, the animal shelter, and humane society in Daviess county will be holding rabies clinics to help to promote rabies prevention.  On Sept. 7, from 9AM-11AM, rabies shots will be available for $5.00 per animal at the Daviess County Animal Shelter, 2620 Hwy 81. A vaccination clinic will also be held at the Eastside Animal Clinic from 9AM-12PM and 2PM-4PM.  Rabies shots will be provided for $5.00 per animal.  On Sept. 8, a clinic will be held at the Owensboro Daviess County Humane Society from 8AM-12PM. In honor of World Rabies Day, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is urging rabies titer testing. All veterinary professionals are invited to have their titers tested for the reduced fee of $10.00 - offered by the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Samples must be submitted between 9/8/07 and 9/22/07 to qualify for the reduced fee. "Vets For Pets" will be a school and community wide 5k run/walk with dogs to be held on Sunday October 7, 2007. Participants are invited to pre-register by September 26th. Entry forms can be downloaded off of our web site at www.vet.osu.edu/VetsForPets.htm. Day of registration begins at 9:30AM and the race will kick off at 11AM. It will begin on the Veterinary campus (1900 Coffey Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210) and follow a 3.1 mile route through the core of The Ohio State University campus before ending back on the veterinary campus where we plan to have a wide variety of events stationed. The entry fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt, goodie bag, raffle tickets, and lunch.

On Saturday, September 8, 2007, the Oklahoma State University, College of Veterinary Medicine is planning a Run 4 Rabies at Bomer Lake. All the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Alliance for Rabies Control to help with the research and treatment of rabies cases worldwide. Come out starting at 7:30 to register for the 5K and learn about prevention of rabies in humans and animals. Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services (HCPHES) is planning a number of activities in recognition of World Rabies Day. One such activity is the creation of an Animal Bite Information Sheet/Flow Chart for Healthcare Providers that contains recommendations for treatment of animal bites and administration of rabies post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). HCPHES is also developing a Bat Tool Kit to equip independent school districts’ staff with practical information to assist them in the event that a bat is found on school property. The toolkit will contain protocol recommendations for school administration and safety/maintenance staff, a copy of the Information Sheet for Physicians, as well as the World Rabies Day class curriculum and instructions on how to catch a bat and how to create a bat box.  Tomball College veterinary technology students will partner with HCPHES to sponsor a pet rabies vaccination clinic at Tomball College on September 8th. In addition, HCPHES will provide rabies vaccinations for $5. HCPHES is also contacting the Harris County Veterinary Medical Association to encourage area veterinarians to support World Rabies Day by offering 1/2 price pet rabies vaccinations or free heartworm check with rabies vaccinations. The veterinary technology students at Tomball College are going to partner with us to sponsor a pet rabies vaccination clinic at Tomball College on September 8th. We will be providing rabies vaccinations for $5. HCPHES staff are developing a newsletter article targeting medical audiences to be sent to agencies that support veterinarians, hospitals, physicians and nurses. The Washington State University (WSU) College of Veterinary Medicine will be participating in World Rabies Day by making a public service announcement during the Annual Gridiron Classic football game between WSU and San Diego State University. Dr. Dedmon is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine in General Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Occupational Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He is also an active member of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), and the International Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID). Subsequent to over a decade of private practice, he was Vice-President for Medical Affairs for Kimberly-Clark Corporation in Neenah, Wisconsin, where he was responsible for preventive health programs and international travel health for employees and their families.
